How does an electric screwdriver work?

Electric screwdrivers are generally the same shape as traditional screwdrivers. They are handy for a wide range of uses, and can usually be used in confined, tighter spaces with ease. They provide around 2.4 or 3.6 volts of power as standard, so are good for multiple projects, but may struggle on excessively difficult jobs, unless they are constantly connected to a mains power supply, or they have just been charged.

Most models can be used in a number of positions, and can convert from straight to point shapes, with the flick of a button, or the use of an interchangeable extension.  The power for electric screwdrivers is generally provided by a 2.4, 3.6 or 4.8 volt battery, though this will differ, depending on the make and model.

Electric screwdrivers are usually cordless in design- they are powered using a rechargeable battery and will arrive complete with a separate unit for charging. Power is measured in volts, and the higher the voltage, the more powerful the screwdriver is likely to be. You will need to read the instructions provided with your electric screwdriver to assess the correct charging time for the unit.

Electric screwdrivers use revolutions per minute (RPM) to calculate their speed – again, the higher the RMP is, the more powerful the screwdriver will be. Many electrical screwdrivers also have a useful reverse action, so you can easily remove screws as well as inserting them.

Power

Check the volts provided by the unit, and also the revolutions per minute (RPM) to accurately gage the power of a unit. The higher the volts and the RPM – the more powerful the unit will be. This is important if you intend to use it on lengthy/more difficult projects.

Comfort

Ensure that the screwdriver is comfortable to use – this is especially important if you are left-handed. Many electric screwdrivers have rubberized 'soft-grip' anti-slip handles, adding to your comfort when using them, and offering higher safety levels, as they are less likely to slip during use.

Battery life

Find out how much life the battery holds (i.e. how long the charge will last when the screwdriver is in operation) and how long it takes to charge up. Light

Many electric screwdrivers have an integrated light – this can be an essential feature if you need to use it in less than optimal lighting conditions, for example in tight spaces, or underground.

Does the screwdriver have any extras, such as additional screw/drill bits and/or a carry case? If you plan to use the screwdriver on a number of varied projects, or on the go, this can be an important aspect to consider when you are making your purchase.

Guarantee

Find out if the screwdriver is covered by a guarantee. This is very important if you tend to use the unit a lot, for anything other than light drilling or screw fixing projects.

Parts availability

Find out if parts for the screwdriver are easily available – you may need replacements over time, so will need to be able to purchase them with ease, at an acceptable price.
